Meet the neighbours – Daniel Galvin OBE

This month, our neighbour is the celebrated hair colourist Daniel Galvin, a legend in his field since the Sixties. The scion of a hairdressing has carved his own distinctive niche with the most exotic palette in coiffure. From Japanese food to a new project in Selfridges, Daniel Galvin’s passions touch nearly every corner of the capital.

Q: What do you like about London?

A: I really love how London has developed into a truly international city.  I like the diversity of the different cultures and most importantly I can eat some of my favourite Japanese and Chinese food.

Q: What three things would take with you if you were stranded on a dessert island?

A: My Ipad, my toothbrush and my shampoo.

Q: What was the first home you bought?

A: A maisonette in Richmond, Surrey.

Q: Who have been your favourite celebrity clients over the years?

A: I don’t really have a favourite celebrity client, they’re all my favourites. At our salons we really pride ourselves on treating each and every one of our clients in the same way.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

A: We’ have just opened a new salon on the 3rd floor at Selfridges. They’re a fantastic partner to work with and it’s very exciting.

Q: Any hair disasters over the years?

A: There was plenty of disasters early on in my career as I was basically self-taught and always wanted to bend the rules, doing things differently. However, I haven’t had a disaster for quite some time (fingers crossed).

Q: What are the colour hair trends this year?

A: As a colourist, I firmly believe you cannot have a trend when it comes to hair colour. The best hair colour is one that suits the individual and emphasises their eye colour and skin tone. It should look natural, so that hopefully no one will even notice they’ve had it done.

Q: Who would you like to work with?

A: I’d really love to work with Kate Middleton as she really reflects our brand identity of natural beauty enhancement.

Q: What inspires you?

A: I love nature, I’m fortunate enough to visit Japan quite frequently and I particularly love going there in spring as I get inspired by the beautiful Japanese flowers.

Q: And your favourite interior designers?

A: At my newly-opened Kensington salon, the design was influenced by Axel Vervoordt (www.axel-vervoordt.com/en/interior-design). I love the contemporary, but traditional style

Q: And finally, what makes your ideal home?

A: Traditional, super comfortable, simple and it would have an open fireplace, too.
